name change

So... I changed the name of my blog to The Launderette because that's the name of my store and I like it better than Faux Realism. Weidly, the store was named after my original blog, called The Launderette, I had in like 2008. This name has staying power, I guess, and I like that.

Speaking of the store, I'm offering 24% off now through Monday, Feb 18th with coupon code: HAPPY24. Because I turn 24 tomorrow. That's one whole percent more savings than last year!

The snow from the blizzard the other day is basically gone now. There's piles of it here and there but no more getting soaked feet from trying to step from the street to the sidewalk. The day after the blizzard was gorgeous-- actually, it's been sunny more often recently which I love-- so I went on a long walk and took a bunch of pictures.

I did not make these, but I liked them:

When I got back, Michael and I made pizzas. Whenever I take pictures of something I'm making, I ALWAYS forget to take pictures once it's done. Probably because I'm too busy eating it. So... two raw pizza pictures. The one on the left is carmelized onion, mushroom, and shredded mozerella. The right is tomato sauce, fresh mozerella, red peppers, and tomato.

koos koos

Hello world!

A couple weeks ago I found a recipe for a black bean, orange and corn quinoa salad through Karla's Closet blog. It looked amazing and I'd never tried quinoa so I saved it in my favorites bar and since yesterday we finally got the gas cut on in our new apartment, I decided to make the salad tonight. And let me tell you.... it is (I'm currently eating it) amazing!

The grocery store I went to only had preflavored quinoa--roasted garlic sounded like it'd be bad with this-- so I decided to get couscous instead... so I still haven't tried quinoa. I can be weird about textures so maybe it's for the best. Anyway, I kept all the other ingredients the same and it came out great! The cumin-lime dressing is key. Such. Good. Flavors. Also, I used frozen corn and canned black beans and just heated 'em up in a pan first. It really doesn't matter at all.

MAKE IT NOW. RECIPE HERE.

This is the picture from the website. But mine looked just like that. Love recipes like that. A lot of times the recipe's photograph looks A LOT better than my crappy looking results.

Recipe: Tostones

As a mixed person, I have lived through 22 long years of people thinking I am Hispanic. When I went to school at Temple, every time I would take the Greyhound back home someone at the station would start speaking to me in Spanish. Now, at work, I have gotten many looks of confusion when, after being spoken to in Spanish, I respond in Spanish that is less than fluent. This mixed-person/Hispanic-person relationship has not just been projected onto me from other people, but, in someways, I have established it myself. As a kid I liked reading American Girl books. I liked Kirsten 'cause she was Swedish like me. I liked Addy 'cause she was Black like me. But I really liked Josefina, the Mexican girl from the early 1800s, because she looked most like me.

The straight across eyebrows help.

I say all that (and there are many, many other stories like these) because the other day when I made tostones (fried plantains), I couldn't help but think these things. I felt Hispanic. Maybe it wasn't just projected onto me but into me. Maybe that's ridiculous. Maybe all mixed people feel like this.

All this rhetoricalness is making me feel like Carrie Bradshaw, so I'm gonna cut it out and get down to business: Tostones. Make them. Here's how:

Ingredients:
Ripe black plantains
Cooking Oil
Sriracha, sour cream, and lime for serving (optional)

I got my plantains at an Asian supermarket, but I think a lot of grocery stores have them too. For tostones the plantains need to be ripe and black. So if you're me, buy them green because lord knows you're not gonna cook them right away.

Peel the plantains and slice them. The pieces should be about a half an inch thick.

Heat the oil. I used olive oil 'cause it was the only kind I had and they turned out really well with a nice flavor. So I suggest olive oil but anything would work. You want the bottom of the pan to be covered with oil. Using a lot of oil always scares me (It's just so much!), but it's necessary.

Fry them thangs til they're golden and a little crisp. Then.....

Smoosh 'em! Wax paper is what most recipes say to use, but some left over cardboard works really well because it helps to soak up some of the oil. I appropriately used a Corona box. Yikes.
Whatever you use, you wanna put the plantain slices between two pieces of it and press down. You also might want to have your door open and drink iced coffee (see picture) while you do this. I did and found that it added to the experience.

Once they're adequately smooshed, it's time to fry again. There might be enough oil left in the pan; if there isn't just add some more, this time frying the plantains until they are crisp and brown.

Let them sit on some paper towels, press some of the excess oil off, and they're all ready!

I like to eat them with Sriracha sauce. (But, I like to eat everything with Sriracha sauce.) I also tried them with sour cream and lime juice and it was really good.

Alum

Being a college graduate means I get to sit around and hang out with Andre and paint my nails with glitter nail polish. So basically, I get to act like a six-year-old again except that now I can drink and like have a boyfriend and stuff. I mean, I still had to work two jobs today, but I'm trying to ignore that part of my life and focus on this part:

Glitter polish is cool because you can mess up and it doesn't matter. It's impossible to get off with remover though so hopefully I won't get sick of it too soon.

Happy Wednesday!

Now I don't like being all up in other people's shiz when I don't know them, but that newly discovered son of Arnold Swarchenegerhhehhrrreeerr LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE HIM. Didn't somebody at some point go, "Oh weird, your kid looks just like Arnold Swarzeneggerrergg. Oh hey! Didn't you used to work for him?"

Not pictured: Newly discovered son of Arnold S. Look it up if you need to, I ain't posting it here. Too weird.
I wish raspberries weren't so expensive. I want to do this.

Sideburns and Bagels

Smithsonian is holding a contest for best Civil War facial hair and if that wasn't awesome enough look at who's winning:

Ambrose Burnside.

His name is thisclose to being sideburn! And I'm pretty sure that's why he's winning by like 3000 votes.

In other news, I'm starting to get really exciting about my move to New York in August and the blog Maison des Reverie is almost entirely to blame. She has recently posted about a sandwich shop with Bahn Mi, a Cuban resturant, and a bagel shop. One right after another. In that order. My roommate and I went and looked at the restuarant's menus on their websites and.... THEY WEREN'T EXPENSIVE! We peed ourselves with delight! Not really, but I mean... Seriously. Like... Ugggh I am having trouble expressing my excitement. Look!

Bahn Mi!

Bagel with Lox!

Do you know how hard it is to find a good bagel in Richmond?! Not that hard, there's a couple places that get them imported from H&H, but the places near my house that have them are Starbucks, Panera, and some coffee shops that have crappy mushy stupid bagels. I mean... look at that thing! It is glorious! I will eat you in three months!

UPDATE: Just kidding! My boyfriend has just informed me that the sideburn was named after him and he pretty much invented it. So, really, that gives him an unfair advantage in this competition. There are some intense competitors with really crazy freaking facial hair that just don't stand a chance.

Christmas in April

I found-- Well, I finally charged my camera's battery and rediscovered some pictures from around Christmas time. I had joined Chictopia briefly and, as you can see above, my outfit pictures turn out like that which is why I joined Chictopia BREIFLY. The candle is this cool one that looks just like a cork and you put it in wine bottles to use those as the candle holder that Michael's momma gave me. (Holy cow. I had so much trouble phrasing that sentence that I decided to give up and just leave it as a hot tranny mess.)

These are cookies are some I made for my mom. I got the recipe from Ezra Pound Cake. You might wanna just go to the Ezra Pound Cake website anyway. One, because there are other delicious sounding recipes. And two, because, in stark contrast to my trashy looking ones, there are those classy, food blog lookin' pictures where only the front of the subject is in focus and the back is all blurry and stuff.

I like to drink beer while I bake. It's refreshing. (I just wrote that as "I like to drink beer while I drink" on accident which is both funny and true.)

Here's the link to Walnut Acorn Cookies. I changed mine to hazelnuts and they were reallllly good. I'd never made anything with hazelnuts before, but it was a really good decision, especially if you're like me and don't like walnuts.

They make my mouth feel weird. TMI?

Richmond what up

People of Richmond,

If you don't want creepy old dudes touchin' your shit don't go to the coin laundry on Ryland and Grace. Moving my stuff to the dryers FOR ME isn't doing me any favors, buddy. I was coming back to do that myself. I don't put my bras in there. I don't put clothes that aren't supposed to go in the dryer in the dryer. I'm the only person I want touching my underwear (unless they have my consent). If you put three towels in a dryer with all the other clothes its gonna take them A LOT longer to dry which is a huge inconvinience for me. All of these things are made worse by the fact THAT I DIDN'T WANT YOU TOUCHING MY STUFF IN THE FIRST PLACE. I'm glad you lost a couple bucks of your own money paying for my clothes to finish drying and I hope you keep losing business. I ain't comin' back. I had a very, very calm day before this. (<-- That last bit is a link. And its a good'un!)

End rant.

PS. I had a delicious brunch at 821 this morning. If you're in the Richmond area and are looking to have a delicious brunch but not looking to get your clothes touched by weirdoes without your consent, then I highly suggest 821. I can't be all negative.

Apple Picking

Back in October I went apple picking and it was really pretty and I felt all Virginian and shit and I meant to post on it but it never did... so now I am. In other, unrelated news, tonight I went to a party, drank one beer, hung out, and came home at a reasonable hour in order to feel ready for work at 7 tomorrow morning. Yay responsibility!

The apple-to-tree ratio is really high. I had never thought about how many apples grow on one tree but its A LOT.

Me looking like a tool.

Really high quality signs.

Then I made a pie!

Freud says: Why are all your posts about '90s memorabilia?

Today at work I turned on the lobby tv

and made everyone watch a Saved by the Bell marathon!

Penne with only olive oil, parmesan, a little bit of garlic, and red salt (that's right. red. salt.) is the best! How did I not make moreeeeee!?!????!!!!

I just applied to be both a wardrobe production assistant and to be in a play from listings I found online. I think this might be a weird effect of me starting school today.

This local news anchor has the best twitter ever!!!! (Of the two I've ever seen, but the other is Kanye West so, really, that's saying quite a lot.) < 3 Gene Cox

Watermelon

We froze a bunch of cut-up watermelon a couple days ago to use for mixed drinks.

Then we realized we don't have a blender.

So I've just been using them for ice cubes.

And it's amazing!

The water is so refreshing.

And our freezer smells like Jolly Ranchers!

My pictures of watermelon ice cubes looked crappy.
