Re: "Thick Skin"

Aura Joon, a blog that I found a couple months ago, has become one of my favorite to read. I think it's because there actually is something to read. Don't get me wrong, I look at a lot of blogs that a picture heavy with few words, but if the writer really has something valuable to say, I want to read it and it's a refreshing change from post after post of editorial pictures.

Aura Joon recently wrote a post about feeling out of place in elementary school. I could really relate to it and wrote this this comment:

"Like many of the people that have posted comments already, I can totally relate to this. I'm biracial and went to an all black elementary school. Many, many years of being asked "What are you?" always in a condescending tone from people who made the assumption that I would know exactly what they meant, made me have my thick skin. It also, eventually, made me start responding "What do you mean, what am I?" I'd come to the conclusion that if they were willing to ask such a question, in such a way, then they should be comfortable enough to explain exactly what they meant by it.

I'm 22 now and if I have a child someday, I think the only thing I can do is to hope that the world keeps getting better when it comes to race relations. The state of acceptance when it comes to race, gender, sexual preference, might seem bad sometimes, but really it's always getting better."

When will the Madness end? It won't. But this is Madness of a different sort: Fug Madness. And I must say that I am very happy at Taylor Momsen's run for the win. I had to edit them out of an article I wrote the other day because it was just too many. What is happening?!

Back to Business

I hate to so quickly push my little political post down the confines of my blog's Internet Explorer window* but....

BRAD DRESSED UP AS TAVI FOR HALLOWEEN!!!! WHAT?!?!??!?! I have two things to say about this:
1. You know you're famous when people dress up as you for Halloween. Like, can you imagine? That's sooooo weird.
2. And that the person dressing up as you is BRAD!!!!! WHAT?!?!?!!

*Side note: Its really odd to think about things on the computer, such as webpages, having a size because its not concrete at all like a page of a book. Like, certain things are on the screen and that's it, then you scroll down and there's more. Huh? Where does it come from?? I know that this can be explained obviously, but its pretty mindblowing. It reminds of a time, I must've been about eleven, and I was at the library with a friend using the computer. She saw a sign that said that they charged $0.15 to print a page and asked me why they did that. I told her it was to cover the cost of paper and ink and she said, "What about this ink?" refering to the ink on the computer screen. "That's not ink." I don't think my explanation went much further than that. How does an eleven year old explain to another eleven year old that the text on a computer monitor isn't formed of ink but of pixels? I found it baffling that she would ask, and think, this at the time and I still do. Guess that's why it stuck with me.

Bea Arthur Mountains Pizza

Apparently Selleck Waterfall Sandwich came along first, but I prefer Bea Arthur Mountains Pizza. Also, I love its description: "The definitive collection of pictures featuring bea arthur, mountains and pizza." I'll say.
